Santa Marta is a slum located in Dona Marta Hill, officially part of Botafogo, in Rio de Janeiro. The residents refer to the slam as Santa Marta because of the image of the homonymous saint kept till today in a chapel at the top of the hill. The image would have been taken there by an old resident in the beginning of the twentieth century.
The community is famous for it has been the stage for a Michael Jackson's video clip and because of that, on the flagstone that was used for the clip it was built a statue of the pop star. The flagstone, in Beco do Curió, is beside a church of Assembly of God. It is on the terrace of the slam's Culture House.
The community is also called of Dona Marta, for it is the real name where it is located.
Since November 20 of 2008, the slam was occupied by the Military Police of Rio de Janeiro. According to the Public Security Secretary Office of Rio, the drug traffic that used to be there was extinguished.
